Explore how 19th-century artists depicted rural labor and urban leisure in the landscape, from farm fields to seaside promenades. — Join former curatorial fellow Susanne Bartels for a gallery talk exploring the special exhibition On Location: Drawing the Outdoors . The talk will examine how 19th-century artists—such as Jean-François Millet, Vincent van Gogh, and Édouard Manet—responded to the far-reaching transformations of industrialization and urbanization reshaping both the land and those who inhabited it. Works on paper, including drawings and watercolors, reveal how artists captured an era in which the landscape was at once a site of hard physical toil and a destination for fashionable escape. Led by: Susanne Bartels , former Stanley H. Durwood Foundation Curatorial Fellow (2024–26), Division of European and American Art On Location: Drawing the Outdoors features drawings by J. M. W. Turner, John Constable, Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent van Gogh, among many others. The exhibition is on view from September 18, 2026 to January 17, 2027.
