Autumn Embroidery Workshop
About
Autumn Embroidery Workshop Celebrate the beauty of autumn foliage through the art of embroidery with Sonoma-based artist Robert Mahar. Inspired by vintage scientific botanical illustrations, this hands-on workshop introduces participants to essential embroidery techniques while creating a one-of-a-kind textile artwork. Robert will guide students through core embroidery basics, foundational stitches, and creative approaches for embellishing an original collage printed on an 18" x 27" linen-cotton canvas panel. Participants will begin stitching their projects in class and leave with the skills and confidence to complete them at home. The finished piece can be displayed as a wall hanging, used as a decorative tea towel, or incorporated into other creative projects. The botanical imagery featured in the design is sourced from public-domain vintage books and has been carefully digitized and restored, providing a rich and distinctive canvas for embroidery. Rather than following a traditional pattern, participants will explore a free-form, sampler-style approach to needlework, choosing their favorite stitches and determining their own placement to create a truly personalized work of art. This workshop is ideal for adventurous beginners ages 18 and older, with no prior embroidery experience required. More experienced stitchers are also encouraged to attend for a creative refresher and the opportunity to apply their skills to a striking large-format botanical design. Saturday, November 14, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. $78 for members, $95 for non-members | Includes Garden admission. Please check in at the Center for Learning & Engagement.
