In Stained Glass, A Reflective History of Antisemitism, Flora Cassen offers a deeply personal and intellectually rich exploration of Jewish life in Europe, from the shadows of the medieval past to the aftermath of the Holocaust and into the present. Part memoir, part family history, and part historical analysis, Cassen draws from her own upbringing in Antwerp's Jewish community and her later life in American academia, her grandmother Pola’s (b. 1919 Warsaw, d. 2019 Antwerp) long and entangled story of both vulnerability and power, and much more to illuminate how old myths and prejudices about Jews continue to shape Jewish identity today. Flora Cassen is a historian of Jewish history and antisemitism whose work connects Medieval and early modern Europe to contemporary debates about identity, memory, and anti-Jewishness. Dr. Cassen is the Lavine Family Director of the Brandeis Center for Jewish Studies and the Director of the Sarnat Center for the Study of Anti-Jewishness at Brandeis University. Before joining Brandeis, she served on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis and as Senior Faculty at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, where she worked to bring Jewish scholarship into public conversation. She is the author of Marking the Jews in Renaissance Italy (Cambridge University Press).
