Doing Death Differently
About
Most of us prepare for our death through legal documents and financial planning—but few of us consider what we want our final days to actually feel like. This interactive workshop explores “vigil planning”: intentionally preparing for the active dying period, when comfort, presence, and connection often matter most. Together we’ll consider questions such as: Who do you want by your side? What kind of environment brings you peace? How do you want decisions to be made if you can no longer speak for yourself? What music, rituals, readings, scents, touch, or silence would feel supportive? How can family and friends participate in ways that honor both you and themselves? Participants will leave with a personalized Vigil Plan—a thoughtful guide that communicates not only medical preferences, but also the emotional, spiritual, and practical wishes that can help create a more peaceful and meaningful dying experience for everyone involved. If you need accessibility accommodations to participate, or information translated or in other formats, please contact ada@alamedaca.gov or fill out our ADA Request Form at least seven (7) working days before the event.
