About

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with The Lawrence Hall of Science at the Oakland Dia de los Muertos Festival! This year’s theme, “La Lucha Continúa: Aquí estamos y no nos vamos,” (The Struggle Continues: We Are Here and We’re Not Leaving) reminds us that the struggle for dignity, belonging, and the right to remain rooted in our communities continues today. The Lawrence Community Altar Our altar will be created by The Lawrence community in partnership with Tierra Rituals. This altar is dedicated to the ancestors, families, Indigenous knowledge keepers, immigrant communities and community organizers whose love, labor, resistance and traditions have allowed our communities to remain rooted and continue forward. It especially honors those who protected and passed down Indigenous seeds, foodways, plant medicines, languages, ceremonies, recipes and relationships with the land. At the center of the altar will be an ancestral milpa, a sustainable living indigenous farm plot that promotes growth and biodiversity. The milpa reminds us that no person, plant, or community survives alone. The altar’s central message is: Our ancestors planted the seeds. We are the living milpa. Our children carry the harvest forward.
