About

Karen Stackpole is a Staff Audio Systems Engineer in Entertainment Technology at Dolby Laboratories working on the Enhanced Consumer Device Innovation team. Prior to her current position, she was part of the Dolby Cinema QA team, testing multi-channel cinema playback software and hardware. She's enjoyed a long and varied career, stemming from a great love of music and a keen curiosity. She is a performing musician, and started doing live sound in the '80s, branching into studio recording, and eventually establishing her own company, Stray Dog Recording Services, a full-service mobile recording operation active in the Bay Area for over 2 decades. Early on, she worked in music magazine publishing and was National Sales Director at Zeta Music, an electric and MIDI stringed instrument manufacture. A freelance writer, she contributed many articles to Electronic Musician, Onstage, Traps, and DRUM! magazines. She was the Studio Maintenance Course Director at Ex'pression College for Digital Arts for 16 years, and taught lectures and labs in production and post-production sound for the Media Sound & Visual course at Ex'pression, as well as working as a Lab Instructor for the Audio Production course at City College of San Francisco. She has a great passion for encouraging those entering the world of music and technology to be inspired by the possibilities.Photo credit:PeterBKaars.com
