It is worth the drive; it is not a Tuesday evening. One scheduling trap to note: the zoo's daytime hours shrink from October 1, to 9:00am to 4:00pm daily with the last ticket sold an hour before closing. So a daytime zoo visit and a Boston Lights evening are two separate trips with a gap in between, not one long day — which is exactly what families assume and then find out at the gate. The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is in Rhode Island

This is the correction that matters most, because the search term is enormous and the event is not where people think. The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular runs at Roger Williams Park Zoo, 1000 Elmwood Ave, Providence, Rhode Island — roughly fifty miles from Boston, about an hour without traffic and appreciably more on an October Saturday. Its own site gives 2026 as October 1 through November 1, with the pumpkin trail “open nightly from 6:00 – 10:30 pm, last entry at 10:00 pm.” Pricing splits by night: Value Nights, Monday to Thursday, are $20 for an adult and $16 for a child aged two to twelve; Prime Nights, Friday to Sunday, are $23 and $19. Toddlers under one are free, and zoo members get $2 off adult and $1 off child tickets. Three practical rules from the operator: “All tickets are timed, available online only, and must be purchased in advance”; “All tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged”; and service dogs only — “pets, emotional support and therapy animals are not allowed.” Parking is free on a first-come basis with a $15 premium option. Salem, and what to do instead

Every October conversation in this city eventually reaches Salem, so here is the honest version. Salem's Haunted Happenings is real, it is enormous, and through October it turns a small city twenty-five miles up the coast into a sustained crowd event — which is wonderful at nineteen and a difficult afternoon at five. Parking is the binding constraint rather than the tickets; the commuter rail and the seasonal ferry exist precisely because driving in on an October weekend is not realistic.
