About

LGDG is not a non-profit, but a 40-year old discussion group of local, national and global issues. Independently organized but co-sponsored by the Weston Public Library. November Topic: South Pole Explorer The Local and Global Discussion Group (LGDG) of Metrowest will present former Weston resident Monet Izabeth, who, in January of this year, became the first American woman to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole. Her presentation will be on Tuesday, November 3, in the Community Room of the Weston Library at 1:15 pm. Monet, who is now in her mid-30s, said her outlook on life shifted dramatically 10 years ago, when she was invited to join a search for her great-uncle’s World War II plane that had been missing for more than 70 years on the slopes of Mount Kenya. She returned again and again over the following years, trekking up the second-highest mountain in Africa in an attempt to find his remains. “That experience cracked something open in me,” she said/ It showed me, very clearly, what happens when you push past the edge of what feels comfortable – and how much is waiting on the other side. Since then, I’ve continued to build a life around that idea.’ In her presentation on Nov. 3, she will share her story via photos and videos. The LGDG has been a pillar of intellectual life in Metrowest Boston for at least four decades, if not longer. After years of meeting monthly at the Weston Council on Aging, the group moved to the library last year. It began as an offshoot of the Great Decisions Program, but changed its name 20 years ago in order to be more inclusive and independent. The group will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month through June 2027. On Dec.1, we will welcome international businessman and Weston resident Wayne Johnson, who will talk about how the reduction of federal funding, particularly to research in the STEM fields, is undermining U.S. competitiveness in world markets. Meantime, all are warmly invited to attend the Nov. 3 meeting in person or via Zoom
