BIRDING WALK: The height of fall migration

Saturday, October 17 · 8 AM – 10 AM · China Camp State Park (San Rafael)

About

October is the height of fall migration, with birds moving south toward Central and South America. We’ll be on the lookout for migratory wetland species, such as red knots. (In fact, our new Motus Tower , affixed to our campground kiosk, can help you track what’s flying over the park.) In the forests and meadows, we’ll be on the lookout for warblers and flycatchers before they depart for warmer climes. And we’ll try to spy local birds that overwinter here, such as white-tailed kites and ospreys. Along the way, we’ll explore how birds navigate using their remarkable senses and our planet’s magnetic field. Space is limited; registration is required. Cancellation notified via email. Date: Saturday, October 17 Time: 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Location: Turtle Back Trail trailhead Difficulty: easy; mostly flat, ¾-mile walk Cost: free to FOCC members; $5 donation appreciated for non-members Ages: 10 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult REGISTRATION Photo: Mike’s Birds /Wikimedia Commons
