Capturing Star Trails with a Smartphone by Nico Carver This talk is a part of our Shared Sky Festival and will take place in the Theater Images of star trails are an excellent entry to tons of great astronomical questions: Why do the trails arc around Polaris? Why are they different colors? Why can’t we see star color with our eyes? Can we tell time with the stars? With care, capturing star trails can also result in a beautiful image worthy of printing! In this workshop, participants will learn everything they need to know to use their own smartphones to capture beautiful images of star trails. Nico Carver is a dedicated astrophotographer and teacher. After discovering astrophotography in 2017, it quickly became an obsession. From 2019-2022 he worked at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics where he helped preserve the early history of astrophotography through Project PHaEDRA. Since 2023 he has committed himself full-time to astrophotography education.
