Adult Non-Fiction Book Discussion: A History of the World in Six Glasses

Open to all adults who enjoy reading and discussing Non-fictional Literature. In September the Adult Non fiction Book Discussion Group will talk about A History of the World in Six Glasses by Tom Standage (2005) Standage writes that each epoch of our world saw the origin of a form of a popular drink we now take for granted. When humans first became settled into farming communities rather than hunting and gathering, surplus grain stores lead to the development of beer. The Greeks and Romans discovered how to make wine from grapes—a discovery that went through several centuries of development. The Arabic world studied distillation and contributed spirits—a form of drink that could withstand long sea voyages. The Arabs also contributed coffee, which rapidly spread north and west to Europe in the 16 th and 17 th centuries. Tea was the contribution of the British Empire during the resulting from their extensive colonialization of India and China. Lastly, Coca-Cola which started as a medicinal drink in the American South, became a symbol of American 20 th Century Capitalism. The Adult Non-fiction Book Discussion meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11am in Room 201B. All meetings are sponsored by The Friends of the Cupertino Library.
