BLACK DIAMOND MINES REGIONAL PRESERVE - Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by joining bilingual Coal Mine Experiences (in Spanish and English) at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve! A Spanish interpreter will be present for all 3 time slots this day. Coal Mine Experience Schedule: 10:30am - 11:00am 11:30am - 12:00pm 1:30pm - 2:00pm Although little evidence remains from the area’s coal mining history, Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve was once home to the most productive coal mines in California and the thriving mining communities that supported its industry. Visitors can still catch a glimpse of what it was like to be a coal miner in the 1850s through the early 1900s and discover how and why this rock earned the name “black diamond.” In the Coal Mining Experience, participants are invited on an underground, self-paced walk to examine the layers of sediment from below, safely explore the dangerous work of coal mining through exhibits and understand how the local mines powered the growth of the San Francisco Bay area. All participants must be age 7 or older, and guardian participation is required. Hard hats are required and provided. Underground spaces may feel claustrophobic for some people. Please bring a jacket; you will be underground in the mine, where temperatures are in the mid-50's year-round. Arrive at least 15 minutes early, to allow enough time for parking and walking to the Greathouse Visitor Center, located ¼ mile from the parking lot. The walk from
