Machinal
About
Inspired by the true 1927 case of Ruth Snyder, Machinal follows the story of a Young Woman longing for freedom while fighting the constraints of marriage, motherhood, and work. In a society that operates like a machine, she is expected to function as just another cog within it, moving through a series of roles: stenographer, daughter, wife, mother, lover, murderer, convict, and finally condemned woman. Nearly a century after its 1928 premiere, Sophie Treadwell’s expressionist play remains remarkably relevant as a beautiful and raw expression of the struggles women face in modern society. Both haunting and deeply human, Machinal examines the individual versus the system, the loneliness of being unheard, and the desperate cost of trying to claim freedom in a world built to suppress it.
