About

Hello Book Club Families, October is AAC Awareness Month! Celebrate with our Inclusive Book Club, where we share stories and welcome every way of communicating. In Honor of AAC Awareness Month, our Fall book will be: A Kind of Spark From the publisher: “Ever since Ms. Murphy told us about the witch trials that happened centuries ago right here in Juniper, I can’t stop thinking about them. Those people weren’t magic. They were like me. Different like me. I’m autistic. I see things that others do not. I hear sounds that they can ignore. And sometimes I feel things all at once. I think about the witches, with no one to speak for them. Not everyone in our small town understands. But if I keep trying, maybe someone will. I won’t let the witches be forgotten. Because there is more to their story. Just like there is more to mine.” Award-winning and neurodivergent author Elle McNicoll delivers an insightful and stirring debut about the European witch trials and a girl who refuses to relent in the fight for what she knows is right. About our Inclusive Book Club: Each week, an AAC user hosts the session, a librarian reads the book aloud, and a speech-language pathologist models communication using an AAC device . After the reading, we enjoy an activity or game connected to the story. We celebrate all forms of communication, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), speech, gestures, and expressions. Our goal is to create a supportive and joyful space where everyone can participate in their own way. When available, we send a visual schedule 24 hours before the session to help participants follow along. Special thanks to Elle McNicoll and Penguin Random House for permission to share A Kind of Spark as part of this program. Library staff may take photos, videos, or audio recordings at our events. Please tell us if you do not wish to be photographed, video-recorded, or audio-recorded. We will always respect your requests! An ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter or closed captioning can be provided for this program if requested at least three business days in advance. For assistance, please contact your library or accessibility@aclibrary.org .
