About

In November, the Adult Nonfiction Book Group will discuss Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick. (2009) Based on Demick’s interviews over a seven year period with six North Koreans who escaped the country and the regime. The vast majority of North Koreans know little more of the world beyond their borders than the rest of the world knows about their daily lives under the Kim Jong-il regime. Without easy access to healthcare, experiencing frequent food shortages, life for the average working family in North Korea under Kim Jong-Il’s rule is and was grim by Western standards. As of the publication date of this book, ordinary citizens have few if any civil rights and almost no recourse to protest injustice, as complaints and almost any sign of dissatisfaction with the regime could lead to imprisonment. The adult Non-Fiction book group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11 am in Room 201B. All meetings are sponsored by The Friends of the Cupertino Library For accessibility accommodations (ex. ASL), please fill out the online form at sccld.org/accessibility 7+days prior to the event.
