Join us in Brooklyn for a celebration of Bodyworks: The Jewelry of Art Smith , the definitive book on the life, work, and legacy of pioneering Black jewelry designer Art Smith (1917–1982). Smith grew up in Brooklyn before establishing his celebrated jewelry studio in Greenwich Village, where he created bold, modernist works designed in intimate relationship with the body. His creative practice brought together art, music, dance, and the vibrant cultural life of mid-century New York. Authors Joanne Hyppolite, curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and jewelry historian Toni Greenbaum will discuss Bodyworks , sharing stories and new research that illuminate Smith’s remarkable life, artistic vision, and enduring influence. Sebastian Grant, curator, art historian, and professor at Parsons School of Design in New York City, will moderate the conversation. Come celebrate the return of Art Smith’s story to Brooklyn—and the release of this landmark Smithsonian Books publication.
