Women's Midlife Book Club and Sharing Circle: The Cicada Spring by Carolyn McBride
About
Are you a woman in midlife in Northern Virginia who loves to read about other women's midlife journeys, including how they deal with major life changes? Do you want to connect with other women and share your journey of midlife self-discovery and personal growth, make new friends, and build community? Then please join us for a new women's midlife book club and sharing circle, ideal for women around ages 40-60. Our book club will meet at the library to discuss the book selection for the month and share reflections on its themes, while building new friendships. The book selection for November is The Cicada Spring by local author Carolyn McBride. The author will join us in-person for our book club meeting to share the inspiration behind her book, do a presentation, and lead a Q & A session. The Cicada Spring is a coming-of- middle -age novel for women who are ready to rewrite their own stories and discover the strength that lies within. Single mom Katie Young kisses her daughter goodbye at college and impulsively trades the empty nest for a new job and new husband in Miami, convinced that a sunny new life will fill the hole in her heart. When the global pandemic suddenly leaves her with a house full of memories on the shores of the Potomac River, she must face the fallout of her sudden choices and fight for her heart and the land she longs to call home. Facilitators: Carolyn McBride writes about the places she lives and loves, from South Florida's Intracoastal Waterway to Belmont Bay. A former editor and columnist for National Geographic Traveler magazine, she grew up in Falls Church, graduated from William and Mary, and holds a master's degree in fiction writing. Her fictional Potomac Shores series is set on the Potomac River and in the small town of Occoquan and explores the complexities of midlife as Katie and the Beach Bonfire Babes navigate challenges and celebrate life's precious moments with humor and resilience. Rebecca Greene, LCSW, is a Northern Virginia mental health therapist. She is an avid reader of women's fiction and nonfiction and facilitates several women's friendship groups around Northern Virginia.
