The next session of the Berkeley-Stanford New Yugoslav Studies group is held on Thursday, Oct 1, at Stanford (Building 260, Room 252). The session will focus on the writings of Miroslav Krle��a, maybe the figure who looms largest in all of Yugoslav literature. Krleža laid a foundation for what Yugoslav culture would look like even before the founding of socialist Yugoslavia. Starting in the late 1920s, he entered into a spirited argument – now known as the "Conflict on the Literary Left" (Sukob na književnoj ljevici) – about the relationship between beauty, ideology, and political commitment in art. We'll read two texts by Krleža for next Thursday: First, we'll read an essay he wrote in 1933 as the Preface to the collection Podravski motivi(The Drava Valley Motifs) by the artist Krsto Hegedušić. An important statement of Krleža's views about art and socialism, this essay was also written against the Soviet program of "socialist realism." Secondly, we'll jump from the inte
