Graphic Medicine - Comics as Healthcare
About
Stories have been helping people grapple with life, death, and everything in between throughout history. They are the way that we make sense of our world; distilling our experiences, and sharing them with others. Art acts as an empathy engine, expanding subjectivity and bridging the distance between people. Part lecture and part art making, Ramirez teaches us about the history of Graphic Medicine, or the intersection of the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare. Taking inspiration from therapeutic graphic memoirs of experiential illnesses, and educational comics for both students and patients, we will learn how to utilize comics to tell our own stories, and in turn, connect, and heal. No prior experience with drawing, or drawing comics, required. Please bring requested materials to class. Materials list available at sharonartstudio.org.
