About

Thomas Balch Library will host award-winning historian and author David O. Stewart for a presentation and discussion of his newest book, The Democracy We Must Keep, on Saturday, October 25, at 2:00 p.m. The program will explore the ideas that shaped the American republic and their relevance today. What did America's founders say about the democracy they were creating, and can we remain true to their vision today? In The Democracy We Must Keep, Stewart examines nine pivotal documents from the nation's founding era, including Patrick Henry's call for liberty, Thomas Paine's critique of one-man rule, the United States Constitution, and George Washington's Farewell Address. Through these writings, Stewart reveals how the founders sought to create a government rooted in the consent of the governed while guarding against the concentration of power. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, Stewart invites readers to revisit the principles that inspired the American experiment and consider what it means to preserve them in the modern era. Stewart is the author of six widely acclaimed works of American history, three bestselling historical mysteries, and two historical novels. A popular speaker, he is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington Independent Review of Books. Before becoming a full-time writer, Stewart worked as a trial and appellate lawyer and as a newspaper reporter, experiences that helped shape his engaging storytelling style. The program will held in the lower-level meeting room at Thomas Balch Library, 208 West Market Street, Leesburg.
