Drawing Workshop: Surrealist Dreamscapes
About
This is a course for avid drawers and dreamers looking to push their world building to the next level, in both scale and subject matter. Beginning with quicker exercises in intuitive visual journaling, writing, and symbol searching, we will work towards creating a final mixed media piece 18x24 inch and larger. With lots of individualized attention and guidance, we will explore what comes up internally when we allow ourselves to blur the lines between the possible and the impossible and dream up alternatives to the places and beings we directly observe. The course will focus on graphite, colored pencil, oil pastel, or a mix of mostly dry mediums, along with the opportunity to incorporate collage, photo transfer and cyanotype. Students will get to flip through art books featuring mostly women surrealist artists, such as Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning as well as artists creating surrealist work in the contemporary moment such as Issy wood, and Sara Anstis. Please bring a 18 x 24 inch heavyweight mixed media pad and a sketchbook to class. All other drawing materials will be provided. Drawing portfolio recommended to keep your artwork safe.
