Reclaiming the Arab Other as Self: Young Mizrahi Jews Singing in Arabic with Nadeem Karkabi
About
Please join us for a Schusterman Scholars Seminar and conversation with Nadeem Karkabi, a senior lecturer in anthropology at the University of Haifa, and a founding member of Insaniyyat — Society of Palestinian Anthropologists. Dr. Karkabi will map the musical field of young Mizrahi-Jews singing in Arabic. It will then focus on the performance of "cultural hista'arevut" in music, touching on the concepts of sonic masquerading and self-imitation. Nadeem Karkabi received his PhD from SOAS, University of London. His research work on Palestinian alternative music scenes focused on performance, urban nightlife, rave culture, politics of pleasure, among other issues. His current project examines imaginaries of indigeneity, exile/home and mimicry at performances of Arabic music among young Mizrahi Jews in Israel.
